CHEEKY MURAL

The dynamic duo of Indy CD & Vinyl hired me to create a mural in the spirit of punk arcade galaxy

Setting the Mood

Andy and Annie had seen another mural project of mine and reached out for help with their new multi-use expansion space called The 808. We discussed their grand vision, finding inspiration from The Haçienda in the UK, decades of collecting records, and out-of-this-world retro imagery.

Following our conversation, I created a mood board that showed a variety of inspiration ideas. These existing images act as a visual “menu” of sorts. Stakeholders can easily communicate which images they like and don’t like. This stage is incredibly helpful before jumping into original design ideas.

Design Process

The feedback on the mood board gave me permission to play! I presented three pencil sketches and the Client told me which two they preferred. Next, I made vector grayscale versions. Starting in grayscale helps focus on the composition before adding in color. The Client chose their favorite design. Lastly, I made four full color options using the Peter Saville color palette the Client wanted.

Painting Process

I transferred the design to the wall using my VR headset and yellow paint markers. The wall was already painted black so I painted white in the shapes destined to be brightly colored.

This was an entertaining place to paint with the nonstop music playing :)

On top of the bright pink I added fluorescent magenta acrylic paint that made the color really POP. This mural is intergalactic eye candy!
