Murals
Harness the power of paint
Whether it’s your first time commissioning a mural or your fiftieth, I outline easy-to-understand pricing options to suit your specific project. Once we dive into the design phase, I invite you into my creative process with intentional steps designed for collaboration and creating something you love. When appropriate, there is also an option for community involvement: providing design feedback or participating in hands-on paint-by-number with volunteers.
Illustrations
Flat, layered graphics full of depth
With my background in printmaking, I create graphic illustrations built on layers of shapes and images. I create vector-based, analog, and hybrid illustrations to suit different applications. Some examples include:
Editorials
Book Covers
Spot Graphics
Working in vector file formats creates versatility and ease for color separation and other applications. I make physical prints on paper and fabric in addition to digitizing hand-carved linoleum prints to play with color.
Project Add-ons
More bang for your buck
Once an illustration exists, there are additional options to enhance the artwork's versatility. Examples include:
Pattern design (print & digital applications)
Art licensing (reproduction permission)
Prints (letterpress, posters, stationery)
These are great ways to maximize your investment to create a suite of assets usable for memorable merchandise, advertising, and more.
Process Roadmap
My step-by-step approach invites you into the creative process to ensure you love the final product.
1. Conversation with Client
Our first chat will cover the project scope and I’ll learn about the goals in order to prepare a pricing proposal. Once a deposit and contract is completed, the fun begins.
2. mood board
We compile an array of existing imagery to create a compass heading for the project. This acts like a visual menu so you don’t need any specific art training to jump in and share what you like and don’t like.
3. pencil sketches
Next, I create composition sketches in pencil to work out the design. Focusing on grayscale first streamlines the later addition of color.
4. Feedback & Revisions
Based on our contract I will do up to three rounds of revisions. Once the grayscale composition is finalized, I share options for color palettes.
5. Full Color Illustration
If illustration is the final stop on the ride, then I send all needed file types after receiving the final payment. If the next stop is murals, the design is finalized at this stage.
6. Site Visit
We coordinate dates for the installation and I visit the site to plan for any necessary equipment rental (e.g. scaffold, boom lift, etc).
7. Mural Installation
After weeks of designing and planning, the mural begins to unfold before your eyes! I document the process to share professional pictures with you and our online audiences after receiving final payment.
The Science behind Magical Realism
Why I never paint a traditional skyline
Something seen a million times means it is forgettable because your brain sees it, understands it, and immediately moves on. Neuroaesthetics tells us something needs to jolt the brain into attention in order for it to have a memorable impact. With my art, solving the visual puzzle means viewers have “aha” moments by actively engaging with the artwork.
The Awe, Wonder, and
Curiosity Continuum
As I’ve learned about neuroaesthetics, I’ve identified a continuum between awe, wonder, and curiosity. Awe can be an overwhelming, profound feeling. Something that gives you goosebumps. Wonder grabs your attention and catalyzes curiosity. Seeing a surprising and engaging piece of public art is a great way to tap into this continuum.
Medicinal Murals
The arts are the forgotten fifth pillar of health, according to scientist Daisy Fancourt. Just like diet and exercise, engaging with the arts as a spectator or participant is crucial to our physical and mental well-being. Murals are powerful ways to uplift emotions of passers-by, which means Public Art a part of Public Health.
I’ve got murals down to a science
Mural pricing comes down to the time required to execute the project. If a wall is extremely textured or hard to access, then that results in more time to paint a mural.
There could be a large, simple mural that is less expensive than a smaller, more detailed one. Surface area (size) is a variable, but so is level of detail because the more details there are, the longer it takes to design and paint.
The first pieces of information I need are the location and size of the proposed mural area. From there, I offer options for the Level of Detail and the Level of Coverage. This information collection is all part of the initial conversation to learn what your goals are for the project so I can offer options that meet your needs.
Playing with these variables as well as the number of designs created and rounds of revision will create a variety of pricing options that suit a range of budgets.

Cheeky - Starts at $1,500
There are a lot of ways to make a beautiful mural without filling the entire wall. Cheeky coverage can mean a central design or spaced out shapes with the wall color showing through.
Full Coverage - Starts at $3,000
This is what most folks imagine when they visualize a mural. Painted imagery that spans edge to edge, top to bottom. Taking full advantage of the entire canvas!
Panels - Starts at $4,000
For historic brick buildings and other places you want a non-permanent installation, aluminum panels may be the best choice. I paint offsite and coordinate with professionals for the installation.
There are so many ways to create a beautiful mural that transforms a space and connects with people on an emotional level.
