D’lish At The Beach

Client: D’lish

Located right on the water in Ewa Beach, D’lish is a hidden gem of an eatery. Run by two sisters from Australia, this is a very special place full of warmth and it needed an inviting wall to show people what awaits them around the corner.

The Design Process

The lovely folks who run D’lish at The Beach wanted the mural to depict what the view looks like just past the building. Since Ewa Beach is on the western side of Pearl Harbor, the skyline features downtown Honolulu, Waikiki, and Diamondhead. Oftentimes, people couldn’t find the restaurant because there was no clear signage from the street. Painting a bright, tropical mural featuring the logo solved that problem!

To start things off, I created two pencil sketches with slightly different compositions. The owners picked their favorite and requested a few changes. Then, I created the full color version below. The owners of D’lish wanted the mural to be bright and inviting while still tying into the natural environment of Ewa Beach.

Digital color design

the goal of the project:

Stop passers-by so they were curious and came into the restaurant.

The Mural

In order to transfer the design onto the large exterior wall, I used the “doodle method.” Basically, I quickly painted random marks all over the wall. Then I took a picture and overlaid the design with reduced opacity. The doodle method allowed me to create a type of grid guide. This is a great technique when a projector isn’t an option.

Of course, the passers-by thought it was a very abstract mural at first…but by day two they could see the design taking shape.

The exterior wall now captures people’s attention from the street and there’s no mistaking where the restaurant is! The landscaping will soon be redone to encourage photos that capture the memory of enjoying a beautiful view and eating delicious food along the water’s edge.

I created a video montage of the transformation process. Check it out here. 🤩

This project was a joy from start to finish. Discovering the fabulous restaurant in Iriquois Point was the cherry on top. It’s worth the drive to experience the relaxing surroundings and killer coffee, cocktails, and food!

“Siena was a pleasure to work with. After interviewing several muralists we found her to be extremely professional and willing to collaborate with us for just the look and feel we wanted. Her prices were fair and she explained the process very well to us.

She worked over a week to complete the large outdoor mural and was there all day long, she really is that rare bird that is not only a talented artist but an astute business person that really got the job done!

We love the mural!
