Kailua-Kona

This mural for Kona depicts Lowe’s at the center of a classic West Hawaii sunset, surrounded by Hawaiian beauty that spans the ocean to the cosmos. The volcanic texture of old lava flows layered atop one another reflects the dynamic, storied past of this special place.

The starry sky blends into a sunset with mosaic shards of vibrant colors. Both the stars in the sky and the underwater critters are painted in brilliant metallic gold. They both exist in an intangible, ethereal way, and yet our lives are made so much more meaningful by studying and engaging with them.

Additionally, coral reefs represent the heart of the diverse and dazzling Kona community. Across the globe, coral reefs represent 1% of the ocean and support 25% of all marine life.

Our bustling coral reefs provide critical habitat for underwater critters, offering shelter, food, and hiding places. Similarly, Lowe’s provides critical infrastructure for the humans who live in Kona, enabling them to build their dream homes and customize their slice of paradise.

Spotlight the beauty of Hawaii through colorful freestanding murals

Mural Artist Spotlight Video

As one of only 9 artists featured on film, I feel very privileged to share the “why” behind my mural design. You can see the real-world inspiration for this mural, which is my love letter to Kona. I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii for four years and treasured my time there. I worked as a Manta Ray snorkel tour guide, got my SCUBA certification, and met many kind and generous people.

Kona is where I reconnected with my creativity after a long bout of self-abandonment, so it is very special to me. And you can see how the tropical colors of Hawaii continue to come through in my work to this day.

Waipahu

The Waipahu mural remixes classic Hawaiian motifs and showcases a floral sky, hatch mark hillsides, and a giant wave full of tropical fruit. Lowe’s shines bright as the sun amidst a dazzling blue sky full of tropical flowers such as protea, orchid, lilikoi, ‘ilima, heliconia, blue jade, and more.

The fruity wave brings a wide array of fruit to the shore, underscoring the beauty of Hawaii’s diversity.

For the fruit, flowers, and humans, what grows and thrives in Hawaii is the result of a mixture of cultures. Our strength comes from the diversity of backgrounds and ideas coming together to educate one another and build community.

The hatch marks represent the densely populated island of Oahu, full of dreamers, tinkerers, DIYers, and professionals who rely on Lowe’s. By providing easy access to raw materials, Lowe’s plays a big part in how life unfolds in Hawaii. It is a constantly evolving process full of dynamic change led by passionate people.
