Setting the Mood

The goals for this project included:

  • Design a colorful mural facing a bike path

  • Showcase the elements of what NCW does in the context of Indianapolis

With these parameters in mind, I focused on tools, building equipment, and Indy landmarks. This mood board shows the layered, colorful vibe I was going for.

Next step: designing!

the heart of the project:

Beautify a bike path with playful storytelling

Design Concepts

You can see how the design developed from grayscale to color and then from outlines to transfer onto the wall. We incorporated the NCW brand colors, along with bright colors, to help the design pop on the black building.

Installation

I used my VR headset to transfer the outlines of the design onto the wall. The scaffolding doubled as a shade structure during the summer heat. So many cyclists and pedestrians shouted compliments as I was painting. It was great to see the positive community response!

Final Result

NCW installed a sign with great information about the mural and its meaning. The vacant building they renovated adds to the cultural landscape of midtown Indy. I’m thankful for such a wonderful client!

“Siena did an amazing job. I have never designed or worked on a mural project before, and I did not have a clear idea of what we wanted for this project, but she communicated effectively throughout and executed it perfectly!

Siena made the process simple by providing ways for us to share ideas and feedback throughout the design process.

The space is so lively now. Since the Nickel Plate Trail is new to our area, the mural is now a staple for those passing by. The color and vibrancy of the art really make the mural stand out!”
