In an industrial area, a giant blank wall beckoned to be transformed into a colorful, interactive neighborhood landmark

Design

As a community project, I retained creative control over the design. I wanted to take advantage of the big wall and create a vibrant focal point for the neighborhood. There’s a line of symmetry along the center of the wall, and the shapes of native Indiana leaves overlap.

People driving by see the flash of vibrant colors. Pedestrians and cyclists will see more of the shape details as they spend time looking at the mural.

Installation

I used the doodle method to transfer the design onto the wall. Then I alternated between a ladder and a scaffold to cover the 60-ft width and 16-ft height.

It was a joy to hear from enthusiastic neighbors as I painted. They were very grateful for the neighborhood glow-up!

Final Result

What was once an invisible blank wall is now a showstopper that brightens people’s mood. Murals are magic! This painting intervention builds the neighborhood identity and encourages people to take walks and take pictures. My hope is that people use the wall for all manner of photos, such as headshots, portraits, pet photos, and more!
